Maintain good oral hygiene

How to maintain good oral hygiene habits

Table of Contents

Let’s be honest, brushing twice a day? Flossing? Sometimes adulting feels like one long chore list. But there’s a reason why dental hygiene gets drilled into us from childhood (pun intended). For years, I treated my teeth like a personal candy graveyard, and let’s just say, the results weren’t pretty. Dentist visits were filled with enough drilling to rival a construction site.

Then, one particularly brutal cleaning (think water torture for teeth), I decided enough was enough. I wanted a smile that could light up a room, not one that resembled a war zone. But how does a sugar fiend like me transform into a dental hygiene warrior? Buckle up, because here’s what I learned:

Brushing twice a day? Flossing? Adulting can feel like a chore list. But dental hygiene matters for a reason! I treated my teeth like a candy graveyard, leading to endless dentist drilling. Time to take dental care seriously!

Brushing BFFs:

Turns out, there’s more to brushing than just scraping plaque off with a toothbrush.  First, ditch the manual version (unless you have the arm stamina of a superhero). An electric toothbrush is a game-changer, and trust me, the two minutes it takes feels a lot shorter when you’re not scrubbing like crazy.

Next, toothpaste!  Gone are the days of boring mint.  Now I have a rotating cast of flavors – from invigorating berry to cool watermelon – that make brushing feel less like a chore and more like a spa treatment (for my mouth, at least).

Flossing? Don’t Make Me Floss!  I get it, flossing can feel like an impossible feat. But here’s the thing: think of it like flossing out tiny food parties between your teeth. Not so bad, right?  There are tons of options these days – from the classic string floss (which I’ve finally mastered!) to handy floss picks and even water flossers. Find what works for you and make it a daily ritual.

Diet Detox:

Sugar may taste like happiness, but it’s the enemy of pearly whites. I still have my sweet tooth moments (hello, dark chocolate!), but I’ve made a pact with myself to limit sugary treats and rinse with water after indulging.  Plus, I’ve discovered that crunchy fruits and veggies like apples and carrots are surprisingly satisfying and great for a natural teeth cleaning.

The Dentist Whisperer:

Okay, maybe not a whisperer, but regular dental checkups are key.  Think of your dentist as your oral health guardian angel. They can spot problems early on, which saves you time, money, and – let’s be real –  tears in the dentist’s chair.

Bonus Tip:

Make it Fun!  Let’s face it, good habits stick when they’re enjoyable. Put on some upbeat music while you brush, or challenge yourself to a two-minute flossing competition (just don’t share the floss!).

Taking care of my teeth has become a form of self-care. It’s about showing myself (and the world) a smile I can be proud of.  So, ditch the candy coma and join me on the journey to a sparkling smile!  Your future self (and your dentist) will thank you.
